You don’t get curious about brooms until you start sweeping
What are you putting off learning about – and solving – because you have yet to embrace the need, and pondered the solutions?
A coupla days ago I’m sweeping the driveway.
The broom sucked. All stiff from age and mangled from use. Should’ve been tossed and replaced years ago.
But, the average homeowner hardly ever replaces their brooms, or searches for superior models of brooms, because sweeping is a task to be completed and quickly forgotten.
We don’t care about sweeping, we care about not stepping on acorns in bare feet when we take out the garbage.
Plus, any self-respecting homeowner has a blower for clearing anything more than a four foot square of area. (I’m renting and there’s no blower, just five different shitty brooms to choose from in the corner of the garage.)
So, brooms? Who gives a fuck?
But, I’m a curious sort, and it’s possible I was testing a new strain of cannabis after getting my MMUR license. So, I was really into the act of sweeping :)
I’m pondering the pliability of the bristles, the comfort of the grip, the durability of the housing, etc.
It occurs to me how many people have “tested” all these things as a result of sweeping as a regular part of their job. Maintenance workers and such. They would have superior brooms, a method for efficiently clearing a floor, and a badass dustpan, to be sure.
A need that many large companies cash in by accommodating in the nearly billion dollar broom market.
I’m ignorant about brooms only because I haven’t needed the tool much. But now I’m curious and medicinally stoned and because I’ve pondered the quality of brooms, I’ll take a few extra minutes in Home Depot to look over the selections.
I’m about to become, if not an expert, functionally knowledgeable about brooms. I’ll never sweep again without assessing the quality of my broom.
You may be saying, “Kev, I still don’t give a fuck about brooms.”
Exactly my point.

Finances?
Fitness?
Relationships?
The most important factors in our happiness collect dust while we’re busy getting through another day.
Fixing them becomes a task to be completed and quickly forgotten so that we can get on with getting “bigger” shit done.
This is why you hear multimillionaires confess their deep discontent with life.
They chased the big goal as the prize, and neglected to become the kind of person who earns millions of dollars.
So, now they just want to go back and become that person. But they’re trapped by the money.
They delegated the sweeping because their time was too valuable to clean. Now everything is a mess, and they know nothing about brooms.
The fix?
Slow down. Pay attention. Become functionally knowledgeable on a system before you delegate it away.
You could just pop on some slippers and step over the acorns, but isn’t it better to remove the acorns and walk freely?
This question is for me. I hope it helps others as well.
